Amida Nyorai, a Japanese name for Amitabha ("Buddha of Infinite Life and Light"), presides over the Pure Land of the Western Paradise in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. This statue is of carved wood with gold leaf, and is dated 1053. It is the only extant piece by the master sculptor Jocho. It is located in the Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do) of Byodo-in Temple, near Kyoto. |
